A Skittish Cardinal
Is there anyone who doesn’t love these birds? I have to tell you when I see a Cardinal I stop in my tracks. I think they are so absolutely beautiful. The vibrant red of the male cardinal is just amazing. The little points on the top of their heads are just endearing. But they are very difficult to photograph. They are an extremely skittish bird. If they see the slightest movement or hear the faintest sound they get spooked. These photos I had to take from a window with my zoom lens. I had to move up very slowly to the window so he wouldn’t see my movement. I was so excited to get this close. I can’t tell you how many times I have tried only to have the bird fly away at the last minute!

Great series of images, Liz!
I love the red against the snow.

Yes, Cardinals are lovely birds – but as you point out hard to photograph. You did well, though; I love the mood you have created with these photos.

Thanks Otto! I just felt lucky enough to have caught them while they were not in flight taking off!

Nice series. I guess their lack of camouflage means they have to be extra alert to “predators”.
